Fatal Crash / Major Structure Fire - Darwin - Update 1

The Major Crash Investigation Unit is calling for any witnesses of the fatal crash that occurred in Berrimah yesterday to please come forward.

Northern Territory Police, NT Fire and Rescue Services and St John Ambulance were called to attend a structure fire at a cold storage warehouse on Wishart Road at around 7.30am yesterday.

As a result of the warehouse fire, an additional fire fighting appliance was called in from the Darwin Airport Fire Fighting Service to assist Fire and Rescue crews.

At 8:35 am, while en route to the fire, this appliance was involved in a collision with a Mitsubishi Triton utility at the intersection of Berrimah Road and Tiger Brennan Drive.

Despite the best efforts of emergency workers, a 57-year-old male and a 43-year-old female tragically died at the scene.

The 44-year-old male driver remains in a critical condition in the Royal Darwin Hospital.  A 55-year-old male escaped with minor injuries.

Investigations are continuing.

The Major Crash Investigation Unit is appealing to anyone in the area around the time of the crash to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The NT road toll stands at 22, compared to 30 for the same period last year.
