Emergency landing – Alice Springs

Police

Police, Fire and Ambulance crews rushed to the south Stuart Highway after being alerted to a plane in trouble.

The Cessna Centurian single engine plane with a pilot and one passenger aboard experienced engine problems just before 9am this morning.

The 30-year-old female pilot radioed to alert emergency services that she was going to attempt an emergency landing after her plane developed fuel problems.

The pilot managed to land the plane safely in scrubland near the highway approximately seven kilometres from the Adelaide turn-off. Neither she nor her 54-year-old male passenger was injured.

Superintendent Michael Murphy said it was a credit to the pilot that no-one was injured.

"The area where she landed was quite rocky and a difficult place to land," Supt Murphy said.

"The fact that she did so without any injuries or indeed, any damage to the plane, is a real credit to her skill as a pilot."

The plane was examined and a fuel problem attended to before it was flown back to the airport a short time later.
