Drugs seized- Alice Springs

Police

Police in Alice Springs seized more than two kilograms of Cannabis yesterday after drug dogs reacted positively when a car was pulled over at a roadside breath testing station.

Detective Acting Superintendent Travis Wurst said members of the Southern Traffic Unit, the Dog Operations Unit and the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk were taking part in a combined operation at the Tropic of Capricorn 40 kilometres north of Alice Springs when they pulled over a Ford Falcon sedan just after 10am.

“The 22-year-old driver was breath-tested and his vehicle searched after police noticed a strong smell of Cannabis coming from the car,” Det A/Supt Wurst said.

“Police  found five large cryovac bags of Cannabis weighing a total of 2.07 kg hidden in the lining of the boot and a bag containing 0.1grams of Methamphetamines in the front of the vehicle.”

Det A/Supt Wurst said that If sold in remote communities the Cannabis could have a street value of around $200,000.

The man was arrested and the drugs seized. He has been charged with possessing and supplying a commercial quantity of Cannabis and possessing methamphetamine. He was remanded in custody to appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court today.

“This was an excellent result and once again shows the benefit of these units working co-operatively to attain a good outcome. The community can be confident that we will continue these types of operations to disrupt the trafficking of drugs in the Territory.”
