Drugs found on bus -Alice Springs

Police

Police seized 23 deal bags of Cannabis after a positive reaction by Drug Detector Dog Yona at the weekend.

Police from the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk and the Dog Operations Unit searched a bus heading to the remote community of Kintore on Saturday morning. Yona had a positive reaction to a piece of luggage in the bus during the search.

Police searched the bag and found 23 deal bags of Cannabis weighing 21 grams. The 25-year-old female owner of the luggage was issued with a drug infringement notice and the Cannabis was seized.

Acting Superintendent Travis Wurst said police from the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk, the Dog Operations Unit and the Drug Intelligence Unit regularly combined forces to check vehicles heading out to remote communities.

“These random checks are undertaken quite regularly and have been very successful in deterring those people bringing drugs and other illicit substances into remote Aboriginal communities,” A/Superintendent Wurst said.

“This type of operation also highlights the value of the Drug Detector Dogs in finding drugs and helping police in their on-going  efforts to stop drug-running into communities.”
