Drugs bust -Darwin

Police

Police have smashed a drug syndicate after seizing more than 24 kilograms of Cannabis and $70,000 in cash in Virginia yesterday afternoon.

Detectives from the Drug and Organised Crime Section swooped on two men in bush land in Virginia at about 3.30pm on Friday and arrested them. Forty-one cryovac-sealed bags containing more than 24 kg of Cannabis were discovered in a number of 20litre plastic drums.

Within minutes of the discovery, a search warrant was executed at a Virginia residence and $70,000 in cash was seized. A third man was arrested at the scene.

Detective Superintendent Matt Hollamby of the Drug and Specialist Crime Division said the Cannabis was worth approximately $200,000 but could be worth well over $1 million if sold in Aboriginal communities.

"This investigation targeted a network of high-end drug dealers, " Det Supt Hollamby said.

"Drug dealing on this scale can only be inspired by pure greed, but there are consequences for the dealers."

Police executed another search warrant in Farrar where another man was arrested and 200 grams of Cannabis was seized.

Two Adelaide men aged 53 and 47, and two Darwin men aged 53 and 37 are currently assisting police with their inquiries.

Dept Supt Hollamby said detectives had been investigating the transportation of Cannabis from interstate to Darwin. He said police believe the Cannabis had been collected from a freight yard after being transported to Darwin from Adelaide.
