Police have charged a 41-year-old male with drug driving offences after he was apprehended near Bayview yesterday morning.
Members were conducting patrols of the area at around 9:20 am when they witnessed the vehicle swerving in and out of the lane.
The 41-year-old man was pulled over after his vehicle mounted the concrete median strip on Tiger Brennan Drive.
Police subjected him to a road side breath analysis test; however after returning a negative reading and conducting a search of the vehicle, members located a number of syringes.
The male was arrested and conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital for a blood test and was later charged with drive under the influence of drugs and drive unlicensed.
Acting Commander Bob Rennie of the Traffic Enforcement and Specialist Services Command said Police can test drivers or arrest them for a blood test if they have reason to believe they are under the influence of drugs.
“A number of drivers believe they can blatantly drive a motor vehicle after they have taken illicit drugs or after over self-medicating on prescription drugs. Fortunately they are wrong and commit an offence when they do so,” said A/Commander Rennie.
“A person is committing an offence if they have alcohol or a prohibited substance in their system that impairs their ability to control the vehicle.”
