Drug Concealment Nguiu

Police

An attempt to smuggle cannabis into the remote community of Nguiu has resulted in a 16-year-old girl charged with drug offences yesterday.

Local members were in attendance at the Nguiu airstrip conducting random searches after a flight travelling from Darwin landed at 4:30pm.

Members observed the youth acting suspiciously and a search of her handbag located two packages hidden inside the inner lining.

A total of 91 grams of cannabis was located inside clip seal bags that were wrapped in aluminium foil, then wrapped in a paper towel soaked in sweet chilli sauce, wrapped in more aluminium foil and then finished off with several layers of electrical tape.

The youth is expected to be charged with posses schedule two substance – trafficable.

Acting Sergeant Michael Lunney said Police are committed to keeping drugs out of the communities.

“This was an obvious attempt at the concealment of drugs from Police and drug detector dogs that are utilised in random flight searches across the Northern Territory.

“We will continue to screen passengers travelling to remote communities in an effort to reduce the amount of drugs available,” he said.
