Drink Drivers Cause for Alarm

Police

Police are alarmed at the number of drink driving incidents that have occurred across the Northern Territory in the past twenty four hours.

Police Watch Commander Louise Jorgensen says the number of high range drivers is very worrying.

“We are very disappointed and a little thankful that no one has been killed by this irresponsible and incomprehensible behaviour.

“It does seem that people are not getting the message and Police are growing frustrated by some drivers inability to realise their actions are potentially deadly to themselves and even worse, other road users.”

There have been over twenty arrests in the past twenty-four hours for mid to high range drink driving.

A 48 year-old-man in Palmerston was lucky to escape with minor injuries after crashing his car on Woodlake Boulevard.  The man lost control of his vehicle and collided with a cluster of palm trees.  The crash has resulted in the trees falling into a residential yard damaging a parked vehicle.

Police arrested the man after a roadside breath test returned a reading of 0.252%

In Tennant Creek a 30 year-old disqualified female driver blew 0.205% and a 27 year-old disqualified male driver blew 0.191%.

Four drivers were arrested in Katherine, all of them male with ages between 43 and 25 , one of them disqualified, one unlicensed, with readings of 0.095%, 0.106%, 0.117% and 0.154%.

Four drivers have also been arrested in Palmerston, again all males.  A 20 year-old returned a breath alcohol reading of 0.107% and was also driving without ‘P’ plates.  A 32 year-old disqualified driver blew 0.134%.  A 44 year-old unlicensed driver blew 0.170% and a 22 year-old returned 0.176% while also being unlicensed and driving an unregistered, uninsured vehicle with no numberplates.

Two males in Alice Springs have returned readings of 0.120% and 0.099% – one after reversing his car into another when leaving the casino.

In Darwin an 18 year-old male returned a breath alcohol reading of 0.119% and was also charged with driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.  A 34 year-old male returned a reading of 0.111%

There were a further two ‘Z’ class licence incidents (nil alcohol allowed)  when a  22 year-old female blew 0.067% while on ‘P’ plates and a 23 year-old male returned a 0.055% reading while on ‘L’ plates.
