Daly River Community Invited to Attend Meeting

Police

As the Nauiyu Community maintain a close eye on the river levels, NT Police and Emergency Services will be hosting their preparatory Counter Disaster Committee meeting tomorrow.

Key stakeholders are required to attend these meetings and the Local Controller, Remote Sergeant Steven Bott is inviting the community to this meeting also,

“As a small community and one which generally experiences flooding in the wet season, it makes sense to get as many people together early and go over exactly what information we have to hand at this stage.

“As a general rule, it takes a few days for the high water levels in Katherine to reach the Daly River and Nauiyu Community so constant monitoring is required once the information comes to hand.

“One thing that’s certain is the fact the water levels will rise significantly over the next few days and residents need to remain calm but be prepared.

“Drivers need to carefully consider their options before trying to cross any flooded roadways. Trying to predict the water depth or not being able to see if the road is still intact could have fatal consequences.

“It is important the public remain vigilant regarding croc awareness. While there are always crocs here, it will become more difficult to tell the depth or speed of the water which could also be carrying submerged objects such as logs.

“Parents should talk to their children about water safety, especially about the risks of swimming in swollen rivers and drains. This will all be reiterated during tomorrow’s meeting.” Remote Sergeant Bott concluded.

The Daly River Local Counter Disaster Committee Meeting will take place at 11:00am tomorrow, 29 December 2011. The location is the N.N.Inc Boardroom in Nauiyu Community.

All community members and local residents are welcome to attend and this invitation is being relayed in person by Police in the community.

Further advice will be provided following the conclusion of the meeting tomorrow.
