Crocodile incident – Buffalo Creek

Police

Police again urge Territorians to be aware of the presence of crocodiles after an incident that occurred last night at Buffalo Creek.

Senior Sergeant Louise Jorgensen said that Police received a phone call from two distressed fisherman at around 7:50 pm.

“It was reported that the two, aged 30 and 22, had gone fishing earlier in the day and failed to negotiate the incoming tide, resulting in them having to walk through knee deep water back to their vehicle,” said Senior Sergeant Jorgensen.

“Approximately 300 metres upstream from the Buffalo Creek boat ramp they heard a splash and saw a large crocodile lunge towards them.

“They ran towards the mangroves to seek shelter and scaled a tree. Apart from the 22-year-old male falling from the tree, the two men remained there and called Police on a mobile phone.

“Police and NT Parks and Wildlife Rangers attended and using a boat, they were able to return the men safely to dry land. The animal, estimated to be around three metres in length, was destroyed.

“I urge all fisherman and Territorians in general to be aware of the danger that crocodiles pose. For further information please visit http://www.nt.gov.au/nreta/wildlife/becrocwise/.

“For assistance from the NT Parks and Wildlife Crocodile Management Team, please call 8999 4691 or 0419 822 859.
