Court for failing to report – Alice Springs

Police

A youth worker will face court after she allegedly failed to report suspected sexual abuse of a child.

The 33-year-old woman has been summonsed to appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court on January 10 for breaching Section 26 of the Care and Protection of Children Act which requires mandatory reporting of suspected child abuse.

The woman allegedly failed to report witnessing sexualised behaviour of a five-year-old child at the remote community on October 9 last year.
When she witnessed evidence of further sexualised behaviour of the same child in December, she reported her concerns to her management who then reported both incidents to police.

The woman will be charged with failing to comply with mandatory reporting requirements. This is the first time a prosecution has been brought under the legislation in the Northern Territory.
