Car hit by train - Fatal - Pine Creek

Police

Members from the Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash which occurred at around 9.30pm yesterday evening on the Pine Creek Mango Farm access road.

Initial investigations suggest the 44-year-old male driver of a Toyota Landcruiser was approaching from the private access road to the Pine Creek Mango Farm, when a 1.2km long cargo train was approaching.

The train driver slowed to the regulated speed of 70kph when he saw the vehicle approaching. The train driver sounded the horn and activated the emergency brakes, but was unable to avoid the collision.

The vehicle was thrown approximately 50 metres from the point of impact and the driver was killed instantly.

The train driver and co-driver were uninjured and have since been taken to Darwin.

The railway level crossing is controlled by railway crossing advisory signs.

Major Crash investigators are continuing with investigations in preparation for a report for the Coroner.

The train is expected to be moved later today once investigations are complete.

NT WorkSafe and the National Transport Safety Bureau have been advised.

The Northern Territory road toll now stands at 30, compared to 37 for the same period last year.
