Bushfires warning - Kings Canyon

Police

The Luritja Road between Kings Creek Station and Kings Canyon was closed this afternoon after a large bushfire swept through the area.

Staff from Parks and Wildlife and Kings Creek Station as well as Bushfires NT volunteers  are currently conducting  back-burning to try to contain the blaze, and  the road is expected to be closed for several hours.

NTES Regional Manager Clare Barker said tour coach companies which normally travel through the area had been advised of the blaze and the subsequent road closure.

“The fire front is approximately 30 kilometres wide and the public are urged  to adhere to instructions concerning the traffic conditions and avoid the area until controlled burning has been completed,” Ms Barker said.

“Parks and Wildlife rangers and staff from Kings Creek Station are working to contain the fire by controlled burns in the area and the road is expected to remain closed for several hours until it is re-opened under supervision”.

“Bushfires NT and NTES have been working together this afternoon to oversee the situation, and the co-operation of the motoring public is appreciated.”
