Boat Fires at Cullen Bay Darwin

Police

Detectives from the General Crime Section and Fire and Rescue Investigators are currently investigating two boat fires at Cullen Bay this morning.

General Crime Section, Detective A/Senior Sergeant Chris Board said Police received a report of two boats on fire at the Cullen Bay Marina at 1:02 am.

“On arrival, members observed two boats fully engulfed in flames and adrift in the marina.

“The boats were dragged towards the rocks near Marina Boulevard with the assistance of residents, allowing Fire and Rescue Officers to extinguish the fire.

“Thankfully there was no one on board the two boats at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

“I would like to recognise the great efforts residents went to in an attempt to extinguish the fire and ultimately stop the fire spreading on to other boats.

“At this early stage it is unclear how the fire started and investigations are continuing. I urge anyone with information to contact Police.

Approximately 25 local residents were evacuated from their residences along Marina Boulevard due to heavy smoke.

The 13.6 metre Fly Bridge Mono Hull and 15 metre Randal have been completely destroyed as a result of the fire.

Police urge anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area or anyone that may have further information regarding the fire to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
