Police said a member of the public found the baby boy in bushes in the laneway connecting Patterson Street and Thompson Street just before midnight last night.

The child was taken to Tennant Creek Hospital for a medical assessment while police tried to locate the baby's parents. Just before 3am the baby's 22-year-old mother and 29-year-old father came to the hospital looking for the child.

Acting Senior Sergeant Shane Shewring said the baby has been returned to the parents but police investigations are continuing to determine if any charges will be laid.
