A 42-year-old man was arrested in the Alice Springs suburb of Gillen overnight. Police were responding to a domestic violence call and on arrival were confronted by the man wielding a metal bar.
The man ignored Police requests to drop the bar before throwing it with force at a 26-year-old Northern Territory Police Officer.
In the act of protecting his head the officer was hit on the elbow with the solid iron barbeque burner, causing significant bruising.
The man resisted arrest and was later charged with:
Reckless endanger causing serious harm
Assault police causing harm
Armed with offensive weapon at night
Resist arrest
Aggravated assault
Contravening DVO
The offender has been remanded in custody and is to appear in the Alice Springs Court this afternoon.
