Arrest for fire -Alice Springs

Police

Police have arrested a 31-year-old man in relation to a deliberately lit fire on Undoolya Station at the weekend.

Police received a report just after 11pm on Saturday night of a fire on the station near the Santa Teresa Road approximately 15 kilometres past the Airport.

The station owner had been in  the area fighting other grass fires when he came across the alleged offender near a scrub fire. The fire was extinguished and police called. The man told police his vehicle had broken down as he was travelling to Santa Teresa and he had lit a fire to keep warm but it had spread to nearby scrub and began burning out of control.

The man has been charged with setting fire to land under section 48 of the Bushfire Act.

He has been bailed to appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court on September 29.

Meanwhile firefighters and police were called to a new accommodation village in Percy Court south of Alice Springs around 5.30pm on Saturday following a report that a unit was on fire.

Senior Sergeant Jody Nobbs said it appeared the fire was deliberately lit.

“Firefighters and police forced entry to the locked bedroom before being able to extinguish the blaze,” Sen Sgt Nobbs said.

“No-one was in the unit at the time, however we have reason to believe this fire was also deliberately lit and we are calling for witnesses to come forward.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
