Arrest for assault Alice Springs

Police

Police have arrested a 23-year-old man after he allegedly whipped a 70-year-old woman with a USB cable.

The woman told police she and  a number of her neighbours found the man in the common area of their block of units just before 7.30pm last night.

Acting Senior Sergeant Siiri Tennosaar said the residents apparently tried to remove him from the property after finding him defecating in the yard.

“After they managed to get him outside the property, the 70-year-old woman was trying to lock the gate when the offender allegedly whipped her across the back with a USB cable,” A/Sen Sgt Tennosaar said.

“The man then left the area but was apprehended by a neighbour and was arrested by police a short time later. He has been charged with aggravated assault and offensive behaviour in a public place. He will be bailed to appear in the Papunya Magistrates Court  in October.”
