Arrest after car crash - Alice Springs

Police

A 29-year-old man has been arrested after he fled the scene following a car crash in Elliott Street on Monday night.

Police received several reports around 9pm of a car being driven erratically and at speed through Braitling. When they arrived in Elliott Street they found a  Ford Falcon sedan had crashed into a tree and an injured passenger was still in the vehicle. The driver had fled the scene but was arrested last night.

He has been charged with 12 offences including:

Driving under the influence
Recklessly endangering life
Driving an unsafe car
Leaving the scene of an accident

and various other traffic offences.

He appeared in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court yesterday and has been remanded in custody to appear again on October 5.

Sergeant Conan Robertson paid tribute to the many people who rang police to report the driver leading up to the crash.

“Those who rang police to report the erratic driving are to be commended and even though this incident ended in a crash with the passenger being injured, it could have been a lot worse,” Sgt Robertson said.

“We would encourage the community to continue being our eyes and ears when they see this sort of behaviour and ring police on 131 444”
