A 27-year-old man remains in police custody after an attempted armed robbery in Nightcliff overnight.

Police attended the Progress Drive Shopping Centre at about midnight after a young couple were threatened at knifepoint.

It is alleged an 18-year-old man and his 16-year-old girlfriend were walking towards their home in Nightcliff after finishing work at a local pizza shop, when they were approached by an unknown intoxicated male. The man began to yell at the couple before demanding the three pizzas they were carrying.

He then produced a knife and was arrested soon after in his unit.

General Crime Detectives will interview the man later today.
