2011 NT Safer Communities Award

Police

The Safer Communities Award recognises innovative practices and achievements across the nation which aims to make communities safer, more resilient and better prepared to manage any emergency situation.

The awards cover all aspects of community safety with a focus on emergency management including risk assessment, education and training, prevention and preparedness.

The coordinator for the NT awards, Clare Barker from the Northern Territory Emergency Service, says the Territory is faced with unique challenges such as cyclone and flood activity and as we’ve seen in Central Australia, wildfires.

“It’s timely this year’s award is being presented in the lead-up to another wet season in the Top End.”

“It’s important to have initiatives that help communities understand and prepare for whatever is thrown at them. This award helps to recognise the efforts that have gone into making the Northern Territory a safer place to live.”

The winner, to be announced tomorrow, will go on to represent the Northern Territory at a National awards ceremony in Canberra in December.
