Men and women of Darwin raised their orange juice glasses in support of the elimination of violence against women at the White Ribbon Day Breakfast, hosted by the Zonta Club of Darwin this morning.

The campaign objectives of White Ribbon Day are;

3. To build collective knowledge and understanding of the effective prevention of violence against women.
"It is comforting to see members of our community continue to champion the fundamental messages of White Ribbon Day and raise awareness for the elimination of violence against women. "Domestic Violence is a shocking crime and we see far too much of it in the Northern Territory. With continued support from all walks of life in the community we can all help to make a difference" she said. Speaking up and intervening in violence against women is everyone's business.
"It is estimated that one in three Australian women will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. This is a disgraceful statistic for a country like Australia. However I have to say, as a General Practitioner, I think that this figure is an underestimate" he said. "No man should ever commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against any other person, and this is the theme of my talk this morning.
Professor Kidd concluded his address by quoting another great advocate for peaceful means to change the world, Ghandi, who said, "Be the change you want to see in this world" Assistant Commissioner and White Ribbon Day Ambassador Grahame Kelly, once again invited 'All Aussie Men to Swear' by making a pledge as part of the "My Oath" campaign, swearing; never to commit violence against women never to excuse violence against women never to remain silent about violence against women Further details on this campaign feature and the online "My Oath" can be found at www.myoath.com.au
