Youth disturbances and criminal damage - Marrara

Police

At approximately 12:40 am police responded to a report of a disturbance at the Cyprian Club on Batten Road, where a birthday party for a 17-year-old male was being held. It is estimated that approx 300 young people were in attendance at the party.

On arrival, police were confronted by a large fight. Due to the large number of people involved in the disturbance additional police units from Casuarina, Darwin and Palmerston attended to assist in restoring the peace. The party was closed shortly after police arrived and a number of youths were moved on.

During the fight, a youth was struck to the face with a bottle and was conveyed to the Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment as a result.

Police tipped out several litres of alcohol and one person was issued an infringement notice for disorderly behaviour and conveyed home to his parents.

Police received a further report of unruly behaviour and criminal damage in the area. A number of youths were seen jumping on a vehicle and smashing the windows with objects causing substantial damage to the vehicle. The youth decamped prior to police attendance.

Police would like to remind members of the public that it is always a good idea to register parties by using the Safe Party registration kits that are available at all police stations. Further information about conducting parties can be found on NT Police website www.pfes.nt.gov.au.

"If you intend to hold a party for a large number of youths then you need to take some responsibility and ensure there are either responsible adults present or employ security or crowd control" Superintendent Delcene Jones said.

"Open invitation parties are a recipe for disaster as it becomes difficult to monitor and restrict who will attend a party and how many people may turn up, keep parties to invites only".
