Winnebago fire –Tennant Creek

Fire crews fromTennant Creek's NT Fire and Rescue Service attended a vehicle fire north of the town yesterday.

A report was received just before midday that a 2008 Iveco Winnebago was ablaze near the Stuart Highway approximately 47 kilometres north of Tennant Creek. Fire crews attended and found the vehicle fully engulfed in flame. Fire crews were told by the 50-year-old female driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, that she was travelling north to Darwin after leaving Tennant Creek and was approximately 25 kilometres north of the Three Ways when she pulled over after smelling burning.

The driver and her 56-year-old female friend who was travelling in another car checked the vehicle and noticed flames. They used a fire extinguisher to try to douse the flames however the fire took hold and the vehicle was completely gutted. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at around $135,000.

No-one was injured in the incident and firefighters are investigating to determine the cause of the blaze.
