Police have charged a 46-year-old male in relation to a vehicle roll over at Lambells Lagoon early Monday morning.

The man and a 30-year-old female had been travelling in a dune buggy near the intersection of Miniata and Billabong Road when it crashed just before 1:00pm.

Both occupants were thrown from the vehicle and the man left the scene to raise the alarm however could not direct emergency services to the location where the crash occurred.

At about 3.30 am, Police and NT Fire and Rescue members conducted line searches of the area locating the female before she was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

The man remains in hospital under Police guard. He has been remanded in custody to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on Friday 9 April, in relation to the following offences:

Drive a motor vehicle causing serious harm or death
Recklessly endangering life
Drive with a disqualified licence from another state
Drive an unregistered/uninsured motor vehicle
