Vehicle rollover – Lambells Lagoon

Police

Police are investigating a vehicle rollover that occurred in the Lambells Lagoon area early this morning.

Members received reports of the crash just before 1:00 am this morning.

Police, NT Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) and St John Ambulance members attended the scene at the intersection of Miniata and Billabong Road.

It was soon established that a 46-year-old male and a 30-year-old female had been travelling in a dune buggy near the intersection of Miniata and Billabong Road when it crashed.

Both occupants were ejected from the vehicle, however the male drove the buggy back to his residence to raise the alarm. He could not direct emergency services to the location where the crash occurred.

Police and NT Fire and Rescue members conducted line searches of the area and also utilised the NTFRS thermal imaging cameras.

She was located on a road near the original crash site at about 3:30 am and was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

The male has been admitted to Royal Darwin Hospital with a head injury, where he remains under police guard for drive causing serious harm.

A crime scene was established at Miniata and Billabong Roads whilst Major Crash Investigators and Major Crime Detectives conducted further enquiries.

Territory Duty Superintendent Mike Murphy said that it is believed that alcohol is a contributing factor in the crash.

"I continue to urge motorists to be safe on the roads over the Easter weekend, be considerate, don't drink and drive, watch your speed and fatigue and drive to the conditions.

"Police are calling on any witnesses that may have been in the area at the time, to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000" he said.
