Vandals target cars in northern suburbs

Police

Police have received numerous reports of vandalism to vehicles overnight primarily in the northern suburbs of Darwin.

Between the hours of 5am and 10am today, police received over 20 reports of vehicles having their windows smashed overnight whilst parked at residences throughout Nightcliff, Alawa, Milner, Tiwi and surrounding suburbs.

Casuarina Police Acting Superintendent John Ginnane said that the vast majority of incidents did not involve thefts from the vehicles but condemned those responsible.

"At this stage it appears to be the work of one person or a small group moving from one suburb to another," he said.

"For most people a motor vehicle is the most significant purchase they will make, aside from a house or large boat.

"This is a stupid, senseless series of crimes without apparent motive, committed by either one fool or a group of fools with no regard for other people or the property they worked so hard to earn.

"Generally when these incidents have occurred in the past, the people responsible haven't been able to keep their vehicle-wrecking prowess to themselves and can't help but tell other people about it.

"Although we're already pursuing some promising avenues of enquiry, we'd love to hear from anyone who either witnessed the incidents or can assist us with information.

"Ideally we'd like to resolve this matter as a community, and demonstrate that it's the people in this town - not just the police - who put their hands up and say that damaging or destroying other people's property is not on," A/Supt Ginnane said.

If you have any information regarding the incidents please contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or http://www.nt.crimestoppers.com.au/ .
