It is alleged that the two males aged 22 and 19 were travelling along the Stuart Highway in a stolen Holden Rodeo dual cab utility, earlier removed from the Darwin City Council Compound, when it appears the vehicle veered across the inbound lane and rolled approximately 15 metres off the road.

It is believed that both occupants were ejected from the utility and the 22-year-old male ended up underneath the upturned vehicle.

Police, NT Fire and Rescue and St John Ambulance members attended, however the male was declared deceased at the scene. The 19-year-old male was arrested and conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital where he remains under police guard in a stable condition.

It was later established that approximately 30 minutes earlier police had attempted to apprehend the vehicle in Winnellie.

The vehicle failed to stop and police activated their lights and sirens. Approximately 10 minutes later the pursuit was called off due to safety. The vehicle was last seen by police travelling south on the Stuart Highway near the Temple Terrace intersection.

It was later ascertained that the vehicle was stolen.

Major Crime Detectives are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Detectives urge anyone that witnessed the incident, or has information in relation to this, to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.nt.crimestoppers.com.au .
