A man has been charged with murder following the death of a 49-year-old man in Alice Springs last night.

Police received a report just before 9.30pm that a man had been seriously injured following an assault. The victim was taken to Alice Springs Hospital by ambulance and he was declared deceased a short time later.

Police arrested a 39-year-old man at the scene last night and he was interviewed and charged with murder this afternoon. He has been refused bail and is expected to appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates court tomorrow.

Members of the Regional Investigations Division are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. Police are calling for anyone who may have been in the area between 8.30pm and 9.30pm last night to come forward.
