Police have identified the victim of a fatal accident in Alice Springs last night.

It appears the 21-year-old Alice Springs woman died after she was hit by a Mitsubishi Pajero travelling outbound on the Ross Highway just after 10pm. The driver of the vehicle told police she did not see anyone on the road before the collision and only realised she had struck a pedestrian after she completed a u-turn and returned to the scene.

The name of the victim has not been released. The death brings the Territory road toll to 47 compared to 30 for the same period last year.

Police from the Major Crash Unit are investigating the incident and are appealing to anyone in the area around the time of the accident to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
