Police

Detectives from Alice Springs have travelled to Yuendumu today to assist with investigations into the disturbances which occurred in Yuendumu over the past two days.

Members of the Territory Response Section have also travelled to the community to assist police in maintaining order.

The Incident Controller, Acting Senior Sergeant Shaun Gill said the extra police presence appears to have had a positive effect on the community with no further major incidents of fighting being reported overnight.

During the past two days four people were injured as a result of disturbances, one house was set alight and six cars were torched.

"Police have been conducting high profile patrols throughout the community and have also been talking to community leaders in an effort to resolve the various issues behind the unrest," A/Sen Sgt Gill said.

"We also identified several people who were likely to be targets of further disturbances, and these people have been taken to a place of safety and police are continuing to monitor the situation.

"Police have also identified numerous offenders responsible for the assaults and property damage which has occurred in the last 48 hours and we are confident of early arrests.

"We will continue to work with the community to bring the opposing parties together and negotiate an agreement to ensure no further disputes of this nature occur."

Investigations into the incidents are continuing.
