Update # 1 - Charges for disturbance – Yuendumu

Police

Four people appeared in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court this morning charged with numerous offences in relation to fighting at Yuendumu on Monday.

Additional police were called in after fighting broke out on Monday morning involving up to 150 people. Police seized a large number of traditional and improvised weapons and ten people were arrested. Four adults have now been charged over the incident and appeared in court this morning. The three men aged 61, 24 and 25 and a 45-year-old woman were charged with numerous offences including taking part in a riot and going armed in public.

A further five adults were charged with similar offences and have been bailed to appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court on November 30.

Supt Kym Davies said police believed most of the instigators of the fighting had been arrested and subsequently tensions had eased somewhat in the community.

"We will continue to have a high profile police presence in Yuendumu in the foreseeable future, however, we are now hopeful we will be able to help bring the opposing parties to the negotiating table and resolve this situation."
