Unlawful entry warning – Alice Springs

Police

Police have issued a warning to Alice Springs residents to be vigilant with their home security after an unlawful entry in Gillen last night.

Police received a report from the occupants of the Adamson Avenue premises that their home had been unlawfully entered after thieves removed the flyscreen on one of the front windows.

The occupants woke around 9am to find a footprint on a bedsheet and the flyscreen had been removed to allow the offenders to enter through the window.

They then stole a laptop, X-Box games and a wallet before leaving through the window.

Acting Superintendent Lauren Hill said the incident should provide a timely reminder to residents to ensure they lock their doors and windows even if they are at home.

"Most of these incidents are purely opportunistic," A/Supt Hill said.

"Thieves will try doors or windows to see if they're unlocked and will usually target houses that are easily accessed. Another reasonably common complaint is thieves walking into houses through unlocked front doors when it's obvious the residents are in the back yard. Always ensure your doors and windows are locked to prevent opportunistic thieves targeting your place.

"It's also a good idea to come into the police station to fill out an Absentee Owner Advice if you're leaving town on holidays. This ensures police have your contact details if anything should happen to your premises while you're gone. It also assists police in identifying where the unoccupied premises are in town."

"And, of course, take the usual precautions such as getting your neighbours to keep an eye on things and even having sensor lights which come on randomly to give the impression there's someone home."
