UDATE - Fatal - Pedestrian Death - Ross Highway Alice Springs

Police

A 61-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck three times by three vehicles on the Ross Highway overnight. Police received notification of the accident at approximately 7.40pm. Initial investigations indicate that the deceased was in the middle of the outbound lane when he was struck by the vehicles which were travelling outbound along the Ross Highway. At the time of the incident it is believed to have been raining heavily, and visibility was further diminished with the absence of street lighting in the region, being a rural area. Territory Duty Superintendent Daniel Shean states that road safety is as much a pedestrian concern as it is a drivers; he again reminds pedestrians not to walk along, sit or sleep on roadways. "Roads are not the place for pedestrians. If you need to cross the road, choose the shortest safe distance and where possible, cross where there are lights," he said. Investigations are continuing but at this stage it appears that alcohol and speed are not factors concerning the driver in the crash.
