Truck fire -Barkly

Police

Police and NT Fire and Rescue crews from Tennant Creek were called to a truck fire on the Barkly Highway yesterday.

Tennant Creek Station Officer Leigh Swift said it appears the truck was travelling east just after 3.30pm when the driver noticed smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle as he was approximately 75 kilometres from the Three Ways. He pulled over and tried to douse the flames on the rear tyres with a portable fire extinguisher. A passing police patrol from Avon Downs also stopped to assist by using a portable fire extinguisher.

Fire crews arrived from Tennant Creek and hosed down the smouldering tyres and cooled down the fuel tank.

Police blocked the road either side of the incident site until traffic could be diverted around the scene once the blaze was extinguished.

No-one was injured in the incident and the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
