Train Derailment – Alice Springs

Police

Traffic diversions remain in place around the Lovegrove Drive and Smith Street rail crossing in Alice Springs after a freight train derailed this morning. At about 7.05am this morning the freight train derailed a short distance from the rail terminal in Alice Springs. Two engines and one carriage left the track, while the remaining carriages came to a standstill on the track. Preliminary investigations suggest that the rails had become loose with the rain causing the wheels to leave the track. The train was travelling very slowly at the time. No persons have been injured in the incident. It is anticipated that traffic will continue to be diverted around the Lovegrove Drive / Smith Street area for quite some time and police urge members of the public to take alternate routes to avoid disruption.
