Traffic Pursuit – Minyerri

Police

Police were last night led on a wild chase through Minyerri Community after a local male sped off from a vehicle apprehension. At around 10.00pm police attempted to pull over a vehicle that was driving erratically. The 30-year-old male driver evaded the traffic stop taking off at speed, doing a donut at the end of the community and ultimately colliding with the police vehicle. He then sped off from the scene and crashed into a fence, narrowly missing several residents. The Minyerri man returned a blood alcohol reading of .169%. Police also located a quantity of cannabis in his possession. He has been taken into custody and will be spoken to this morning regarding traffic and cannabis offences. A/Superintendent Lee Morgan of the Arnhem Operational Service Division said "Drunk driving is extremely dangerous at any time however driving under the influence at high speed in an erratic manner in a small community is a recipe for disaster.  "People that fail to stop for the police often have no appreciation for the danger they are putting themselves, the public and the police in. It is a miracle that no persons were injured during this incident. Police will continue to take a zero tolerance approach to this behaviour as we strive to keep people safe and keep the road toll down over the Christmas period."
