Traffic pursuit and drug seizure - Nguiu

Police

Police are searching for a 31-year-old man after he evaded police in Nguiu early this morning.

It is alleged police attempted to apprehend the offender's vehicle at 12:25 am this morning before he accelerated away in an attempt to flee. A short low speed pursuit was initiated before the vehicle collided with a gutter and the man fled on foot into thick bushland.

Police followed on foot; however were unable to locate the offender.

Upon further inspection of the vehicle, 114 individual packages of cannabis weighing 36 grams and a small amount of cash was located and seized

The man is known to local police and members are confident of locating him within the community.

Superintendent Helen Braam urges the community to help police in fighting the influx of drugs by dobbing in drug runners.

"The Tiwi Islands are renowned for producing outstanding sportsmen and women and the introduction of drugs into the community will directly impact on the good reputation currently enjoyed by the Tiwi Island people."

"Help us catch these offenders" she said.
