Todd River Update #2 –Alice Springs

Police

The threat of localised flooding in Alice Springs has abated with rain easing in the past few hours.

The Alice Springs Counter Disaster Committee met this morning after flood threat level reached Category C. The town's Flood Plan was activated and Northern Territory Emergency Service Volunteers door knocked residences along the Todd River in the flood prone area. Residents were urged to make preparations in the event they may have to be evacuated.

The Power and Water access road was opened to the public around 10.30am as the Taffy Pick Crossing was closed due to water over the road.

By 12.30pm the water levels in the catchment area north of Alice Springs began to fall as rain eased in the region.

At 1.15pm the flood threat level had fallen to a Category B and it was deemed there was now no immediate threat to the residences near the river .

Motorists should still check road conditions before attempting to travel as the Stuart Highway and unsealed road to most remote communities are still impassable. In the meantime people are urged to listen for flood warning updates on ABC Radio (783 am).

For further advice on road conditions motorists are urged to check the road conditions before their trip by phoning the Department of Construction and Infrastructure road conditions hotline 1800 246 199 or check the website at http://www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/roadreport.
