Suspicious vehicle - Darwin

Police

Northern Territory Police are investigating a report of a vehicle approaching a 12-year-old girl in Karama yesterday.

Police were alerted to the incident at approximately 5:30 pm. It is alleged a group of three to four males drove up to the girl in a small black sedan on Manunda Terrace and asked her to get into the vehicle.

The 12-year-old girl refused to go with the men and ran off.

Two occupants of the vehicle are described as being approximately 18-20 years of age and of Caucasian appearance.

Officer In Charge of Casuarina Police, Senior Sergeant John Ginnane said police found the actions of the group disturbing.

"This is the sort of incident, where had it not been for the quick thinking displayed by the young lady, anything could have happened," Senior Sergeant Ginnane said.

"We don't positively know what the intentions of the group in the car were, but what we do have is significant information as to the vehicle involved.

"We would like to encourage the people in the vehicle to contact us - and quickly, as it may save considerable embarrassment if we have to initiate contact with them," he said.

This incident serves as both a warning and reminder for parents to talk with their children about stranger danger.

Parents are urged to reinforce the importance of the 4 R's with regard to stranger danger -
Recognise the danger
Refuse any offer
Run away and
Report it

Police urge anyone who witnessed the incident or saw anything suspicious in the area to contact Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
