Structure fire - Woodroffe

Police

NT Police and the Fire and Rescue Service attended a home in Woodroffe yesterday after receiving reports of a fire.

The Fire and Rescue Service was first on the scene and on arrival observed thick smoke coming from the residence.

Police conducted a search of the back yard and located the 39-year-old male resident trapped inside a rear bedroom. Due to the unit being protected with security screens covering all doors and windows, members were initially unable to free the man from the room.

Firefighters gained entry to the front door, attacked the fire, located the victim in the bedroom and removed him safely from the house.

He was immediately treated by St John Ambulance personnel and conveyed to RDH and treated from smoke inhalation.

Firefighters inspected the unit and believe the fire started as a result of an electrical fault in a fridge.

Senior Station Officer Mathew Brookhouse said this incident just reiterates the importance of smoke alarms.

"Smoke alarms should be fitted in all households; they could ultimately save your life in the event of fire," he said.
