Structure fire with explosions - Darwin

NT Police and the Fire and Rescue Service were called to a structure fire with explosions at a business just after 4:00 pm in Berrimah yesterday

It is alleged a 43-year-old man was using an angle grinder when sparks lit up some grass outside the building. The fire spread quickly and ignited a store room which contained a large amount of fireworks.

NT Fire and Rescue personnel were faced with the dangerous situation of fireworks exploding and shooting from the storage room but were able to extinguish the fire.

Nearby business assisted the occupants in attempting to extinguish the fire using building fire hose reels and garden hoses.

A 26-year-old man was injured while attempting to put out the fire and was taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital by St John Ambulance but has since been discharged.

Fire investigators inspected the area are liaising with NT WorkSafe who are currently conducting their own investigations.
