Stranger Danger Reminder

Police

Police were alerted to the incident at approximately 03:15 pm. It is alleged a man drove up to the boy on Henbury Avenue and asked him to get into his car.

The nine-year-old refused to go with the man and ran off.

Fortunately, the child was able to supply Police with a detailed description of the car and suspicious person, and the man was apprehended a short time later.

The 49-year-old man is assisting Police with their investigations.

Northern Territory Police said this incident serves as a timely reminder for parents to talk with their children about stranger danger.

Parents are urged to reinforce the importance of the 4 R's with regard to stranger danger -

"The nine-year-old acted in a very mature way - he immediately recognised the danger, he refused the man's advances, ran away and reported the incident to his mother immediately.

"The child supplied Police with the car's registration number as well as a detailed description of the suspicious person, which led to Police quickly locating the man," he said.

Police urge anyone who witnessed the incident or saw anything suspicious in the area to contact Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
