Stranded vehicle - Cahills Crossing - Oenpelli

Oenpelli Police were called to the East Alligator River last night after receiving reports of a vehicle stranded at Cahills Crossing.

Police and East Alligator Rangers were called to the incident at about 7:40 pm last night where the driver of a Toyota Landcruiser attempted to cross the river and became stranded on rocks.

East Alligator Rangers launched their boat and a short time later safely unloaded the two adults and three children from the vehicle.

Brevet Sergeant Adam Russel of Oenpelli Police Station said this incident could have turned out much worse.

"When this man decided to cross the crossing was almost a metre deep and running quite quickly, making it extremely dangerous. NT Police remind all drivers to drive to the conditions and be mindful of deep crossing when travelling in remote areas.

The 51-year-old male driver will be summonsed in relation to driving without a licence.

Rangers assisted police in retrieving the vehicle this afternoon, after the flood waters had subsided and the tide was low to - please see attached photo.
