Police are investigating the theft of two Mercedes Benz motor vehicles in Alice Springs last night.

The vehicles were both stolen from a residence in Roberts Crescent in the early hours of this morning as their owners lay sleeping inside. A police patrol found one of the vehicles abandoned near a block of units in Bloomfield Street while another was found after the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed it into a tree in Skinner Street before fleeing the area.

Police have seized the cars for forensic examination.
