Police are investigating a stealing with violence incident that occurred at a Darwin beach in the early hours of this morning.

Two Finnish tourists have told police they had parked their white Hyundai Getz rental vehicle at Lee Point Beach and at approximately 9:30 last night, went to sleep.

They say they were awoken at approximately 12:50 am by two males wearing balaclavas banging on the car windows.

The offenders allegedly entered the vehicle as the two victims, a male and female aged 26 and 25 respectively, exited and ran from the immediate area.

The offenders were then seen to have driven off along Lee Point Road.

One offender was described to be of Caucasian appearance, solid build, approximately 190 cm's tall and at the time of the incident was wearing a blue shirt and was possibly in the possession of a baseball bat. He was also described to have had a deep, Australian accent.

All the tourists' belongings, including a laptop computer, mobile phones and other electrical items were in the car at the time it was stolen. The vehicle was later recovered after being extensively damaged by fire.

Detective Senior Constable First Class Wayne Newell said this was an unusual incident.

"Thankfully this type of incident doesn't occur often in the Territory and police are taking it very seriously, urging anyone that may have information in relation to the incident to contact us on 131 444 or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," he said.
