Stealing with violence - Casuarina

Police

Casuarina Detectives have a man in custody after a vehicle was stolen in Casuarina early this morning.

The car was stolen after the driver stopped to use an ATM on Bradshaw Terrace across from Casuarina Shopping Centre at about 4:00 am this morning. It is alleged a 19-year-old woman exited the vehicle and withdrew money from one of the ATMS when she was approached by an unknown man. The man is alleged to have demanded money from the victim while threatening her with a broken glass bottle. The woman immediately handed over her money.

At this point a 20-year-old male who was waiting in the vehicle is believed to have attempted to intervene before also being threatened by the offender. The offender then entered the victim's Kia Rio and fled the scene in the vehicle.

A short time later police observed the car travelling along the Stuart Highway and initiated a pursuit, after reaching speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour the pursuit was called off at the intersection of the Stuart Highway and the Arnhem Highway.

At about 9.00am today the vehicle was sighted in Belyuen by a member of the public who then alerted police. A man has since been arrested and is currently assisting police with their investigations.

Media Note - An interview opportunity with one of the victims and Senior Constable Rodney Haymen will be available at 2:00 pm at the Casuarina Police Station.
