Statement from Amee Meredith, wife of the late Sergeant Brett Meredith.

Police

Our beloved Brett is now at peace and I know that he can feel the love and support that has been shown to our entire family. We wish to personally thank Commissioner McRoberts who has been a constant support to the entire family as have the whole NT Police. I am truly blown away by the love and support that has come from the Northern Territory Police and the NT Police Association and I know Brett is proud to have once been a member of such a beautiful family - that family being the Northern Territory Police Force.

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to the Doctors and Nurses at Katherine Hospital who treated Brett immediately after he was injured. I know how hard it was for them, given the fact that both Brett and I had worked alongside them, in the course of our duties, on many occasions. We both know how much harder your job becomes when it is a person that you know and we can not thank you enough.

To the medical flight team who transported Brett to the Royal Darwin Hospital - thank you. Without your service operating many people of the NT would not be able to survive and the work that you do, and the proud way in which you conduct it, is commendable.

To the Doctors and Nurses of the ICU - Royal Darwin Hospital. You never once gave up on Brett and tried until you could try no more. Your dedication to your job is absolutely amazing and we thank you for your services, your support but most importantly, your honesty.

To members of the public - You have shown us all what a tragedy can do and that is pull together and support one another. We have received hundreds of tributes from people all over the country who we have never met and probably never will. The love and support has been amazing and it will never be forgotten.

Finally on a more personal note I want to say a special thank you to Kylie Raftery, Jessica Lee and Sandi Bradley. You girls never once left my side and at one point literally picked me up off the floor and carried me away. I will never forget the love and support you provided to our whole family, all whilst hurting just as much as we were. I treasure our friendship so dearly and I will love you all forever.

Our family now face a lifetime without such a wonderful husband, father, son and Uncle but we will celebrate Brett's life and the dreams he fulfilled within that time. Every time I see my children smile, I will see the same cheeky grin of their fathers and know that he is right there with me, walking with me one step at a time. Our family will watch Brett grow through each of the children in his own special way and he will never be far from our thoughts.

My children will greatly miss their father but I will dedicate the remainder of my life to make sure they knew how much their Daddy loved them and cherished every moment he spent with them. I am proud to be able to tell them that their father died trying to make everything ok, trying to solve the situation, which is what Brett did best. We both chose a career path which requires you to constantly put others ahead of yourself and I know that my children will draw strength from daddys selflessness.

Goodbye daddy.
