Police are investigating an incident in which a woman was stabbed numerous times in Alice Springs overnight.

Police received a report of the assault just before 8pm when a Dixon Road resident called to say an injured woman had come to his house for help. The woman was taken to Alice Springs Hospital with lacerations and stab wounds to her back and shoulders.

The 26-year-old victim told police she was assaulted by her ex-partner on vacant land off Dixon Road near Head Street. She said her ex-partner had hit her with a rock before stabbing her several times with a knife. She then fled to a nearby residence to get help.

Police investigations into the incident are continuing and police are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the assault to come forward. Anyone with information should phone police on 131 444 or Crime Stopper on 1800 333 000.
