Speeding motorists – Alice Springs

Police

Members of the Southern Traffic Operations Unit caught a road train driver speeding on the Lasseter Highway during a traffic campaign yesterday.

The 43-year-old driver was issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice just before 9am on Wednesday when police caught him doing 123 kilometres per hour in a 110 zone.

Sergeant Conan Robertson said the man was driving a prime mover towing two trailers and it was clear the vehicle did not have the required speed limiter on it.

"We defected his vehicle as well as issuing him with a Traffic Infringement Notice for speeding, as heavy vehicles are required to have governors on them limiting their speed to 100 kilometres per hour," Sgt. Robertson said.

A 26-year-old man was also issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice after he was caught doing 137 kilometres per hour in an 80 zone.

"Just before 10am on Wednesday, we caught the man driving a Ford Territory near Mt Ebenezer, which is an 80 kilometre per hour zone," Sgt Robertson said.

"He will now have to pay a fine of $500 plus a $10 victim's levy and will lose six demerit points."

Sgt Robertson said motorists should be aware that general duties police as well as members of the Traffic Operations Unit, patrol remote roads regularly and if drivers are caught speeding they could face hefty fines or even loss of their driver's licence.
